        Bosch in China

Together, We Are the Best Winning Team

Liu Yang & Liu Shi: The Path to Hydrogen Power Module Development

Together, We Are the Best Winning Team

Bosch is steadfast in its commitment to leading the transformation to clean energy mobility. Many associates at Bosch China are making relentless efforts to establish a new era of hydrogen applications. Liu Yang and Liu Shi are distinguished figures in this effort, demonstrating exceptional capabilities and achievements in the development and design of hydrogen power module platforms. Their contributions have not only benefited Bosch's standing in clean energy technology but also created a model of cooperation and innovation for the team.

Creating value for customers and supporting Bosch in becoming a leader in the hydrogen fuel cell ecosystem

The hydrogen power module system platform development project is one that Liu Yang has focused on since moving from RBCD to RBHP. It is also one of the most complex projects she has managed since joining Bosch. This project is part of the emerging hydrogen fuel cell sector, which is still in its infancy. The system represents the most intricate component of the industry. Unlike traditional diesel power systems, using hydrogen as fuel not only brings about significant technological changes but also presents unprecedented challenges in the development process.

This is yet another development process from zero to one. From a technical standpoint, hydrogen safety has become a new focus, requiring the team to strictly follow national and international standards during the development process to ensure the product's safety. Bosch has always prioritized quality and safety. Compared to its competitors, it employs higher-level safety measures in areas such as hydrogen leak detection and high-voltage protection. For instance, Bosch's hydrogen power modules utilize sensors to monitor hydrogen concentration and analyze potential ignition sources. While this adds cost pressure, it is also one of the core competitive advantages of Bosch products, making it an area where they remain uncompromising, even amid price wars. According to Liu Yang, the team can strive and collaborate to identify ways to optimize other areas to address the price war, but ensuring product quality and safety is a bottom line that cannot be compromised.

In addition, the competition in the electric vehicle industry is fierce, and there has been a fundamental shift in the relationship between traditional Tier 1 suppliers and their customers, with customers now having a wide range of diverse solutions available to them. Traditionally, Bosch was the leader in the diesel systems field, with customers approaching the company for collaboration. Today, however, the team must take the initiative to reach out, actively understand the true needs of customers, and provide products, services, and value that go beyond their expectations in order to capture the market. Quickly responding to end-user demands has now become crucial. Many customers sell their transport vehicles to operators, such as logistics companies, which place a high value on efficiency. Liu Yang's team must arrive at the customer's site within one hour, identify any issues within two hours, and provide problem diagnosis and solutions within 24 hours to ensure that end users' operations are not disrupted.

        Liu Yang & Liu Shi

Liu Shi joined Bosch in 2021 and is currently working as a design engineer in RBHP, primarily responsible for the design of hydrogen power module platforms. A hydrogen power module generates electrical energy through a redox reaction between air and hydrogen gas in the fuel cell, providing power to the entire vehicle. However, the internal channel structure of the fuel cell is highly sophisticated, necessitating stringent cleanliness standards. One of the challenges he faces is ensuring that the cleanliness level inside the fuel cell is consistently maintained to extremely high standards. Although this is not a primary concern in the Chinese market, it significantly affects product reliability and the lifespan of the fuel cell, which is particularly important for Bosch's commitment to quality and safety.

To tackle this challenge, he and his team successfully built Bosch's first cleanliness testing platform for hydrogen power modules. This achievement not only fills a technological gap within the company but also lays a solid foundation for subsequent mass production, further strengthening Bosch's robust capabilities in driving local innovation. At the same time, to address cost challenges, they adopted a localized development strategy, conducting multiple rounds of design optimization and simplification on the core components for particle collection. This approach ensures that their solution is on par with imported products in terms of performance, successfully meeting cleanliness requirements to ensure the reliability of hydrogen power modules. Additionally, this mature system is planned for export to Germany for use in FCPM applications.

Looking ahead: Stay confident and contribute "hydrogen" power for a greener world

Although the application of fuel cell systems is still in its early stages, limited by a lack of hydrogen refueling stations and other infrastructure, their market share in the commercial vehicle sector remains relatively low. However, as the global policy environment continues to improve and infrastructure gradually develops, Liu Yang and Liu Shi are fully confident that Bosch's hydrogen fuel cell systems will achieve a leading position in this field, ushering in a new era of power.

Seventy-eight demonstration vehicles equipped with Bosch's hydrogen power modules were delivered and put into operation in Wuxi. This marks another significant step by Bosch in promoting green mobility and advancing the development of clean energy mobility. It highlights Bosch's deep expertise and strong capabilities in the entire hydrogen energy supply chain. This success is built on Bosch's long-term strategic focus and execution, consistently upholding the principles of technological leadership and quality excellence. The continuous investment in R&D in this area, combined with the dedicated efforts of associates like Liu Yang and Liu Shi, supports the development of "super commercial vehicles."
