When Bosch first started business in Shanghai in 1909, a small trading office was all it needed. But in the more than 100 years since then, the Bosch workforce in Shanghai has grown to some 3,500. In April 2011, Bosch inaugurated its new China headquarters building in Shanghai, its largest regional headquarters in Asia Pacific.
In close proximity to the Hongqiao Transportation Hub, the new Bosch China headquarters houses the Bosch associates who were previously scattered over various locations in Shanghai. By the end of 2012, the building is expected to provide office space for 2,000 associates. The result of a total investment of some 110 million euros, the building also provides extensive R&D facilities and a training center. The new Bosch China headquarters also features state-of the art resource-conserving and energy-efficient building technologies. Many of these are Bosch products, such as a geothermal system for cooling and heating, a photovoltaic system, and a solar thermal system for water heating. Saving some 2,000 metric tons of CO2 and 7,000 megawatt hours of electricity per year, the building received the "Shanghai Energy Saving Model Unit" award from the Shanghai Energy Saving Bureau in 2010 for its extensive green features.
